Monkey Shoulder Batch27 – Scotch

This is a highly popular Scotch amongst whisky drinkers. The price is considered budget and its very easy to drink, the bottle often seems to be empty or nearly halfway there. The branding for monkey shoulder is brilliant and I recommend their website to view, the mouse wheel is needed for a cool effect. www.monkeyshoulder.com or for sale HERE or on one of the three bottles above.

What is Monkey Shoulder

Monkey Shoulder (monkey) is a term for a condition that people would get who used to stir the malt barley and the copper pots. Basically a bad working condition side effect that resulted in a defect. The three monkeys represents three distillery’s in-which the original single malts came from. They are Speyside distiller’s and the monkeys(different malts) make eyes with each other and “marry together”. They are progressive, and as I drink this as a sipper and maybe a cocktail. They encourage this as a mixing whisky as its pretty “robust” and they say it has a “playful attitude” to encourage a new generation of whisky drinkers.

Where are they from

The whisky is produced by three malt whiskys. All of them are Speyside, which means they are already super friendly and easy to drink in terms of Whiskys. The Malts are from Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie. These three are big names in the Whisky World especially Glenfiddich, as even none whisky drinkers have heard of them.

Top Notch Tasting

  • Nose : I found it to be floral, fruity that’s almost sweet sour marmlade with touch of chocolate on the nose. Also mulled wine notes.
  • Palate: Slightly creamy with almost fruit juice sour acidity within it. Some honey slight butter scotch.
  • Finnish: Not a lengthy finish, for me the slight sour acidic clears away taste but there is some apricot and slight spice on the finish.
  • * when I say sour and acidic its nothing horrible it can be nice. I love this whisky!

Chaps at Master of Malts Tasting

Nose: An elegant, stylish nose of marmalade, Crema Catalana (apologies, but it really is there), cocoa and malt. Plenty of vanilla and a sprinkling of winter spice (nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon) alongside a mouth-watering hint of aniseed.

Palate: Very malty, creamy delivery with a suggestion of berry fruit. Juicy toasted barley, cloves and butterscotch. Manuka honey, hot-buttered-toast and dried apricot develop.

Finish: Medium length, spicy oak and a hint of peppermint on the tail.

Overall: According to the Monkey Shoulder website: “Some say it tastes just like riding bareback on the wild moors of Scotland with a flame haired maiden on Christmas morning. Others agree it tastes like 007 wearing a tuxedo wetsuit.” This is whisky to be enjoyed.

Overall as stated in the start, this whisky is loved by whisky drinkers. It can be great in cocktails as well such as whisky sours. I would buy this for the shelf, and we do !.
